Still playing around with the sewing machine. This little piece is on card stock, with old ledger paper that has been stenciled and then wrapped with brown wax paper. I stitched the lady on top, and added vintage millinery and vintage lace to the bottom.

Love, love, love sewing on paper...something about it just makes me happy! And I'm all for being happy!

What a roller coaster ride this past month has been with the computer. As it slowly disintegrated into no longer being able to download, upload or copy pics, I lost the ability to be a part of the blog world.

But funnily enough, when one time sucker closes, another one opens. Not much computer time made time for journaling and creating. Hmmm, image that. And sewing. I got a sewing machine. I have been sewing everything, journal pages, cards, bills that need to be paid, everything. As you can see above, it got sewn. And yes, that is my hand-writing.

I also got to spend several days with a couple of creative-minded friends, and that always gives me the kick in the seat to go on a crafty binge. Sharing supplies and ideas is always a good thing.

All of the above pages are from my Art Journal book, that I created when I had the chance to take Shelly's class last summer (with Paper Cowgirl). Shelly is so awesome and it was a real boost to my own artwork to learn how to use gesso when creating great journal pages. I had experimented some with acrylic paints, but in this class, it really gave me the chance to explore even further.

This is my journal that I don't mind letting other people see. Most are really collage pages with very little journaling. Especially the last photo. I just liked that scrap book paper and wanted to keep it. But I did want it to look like it had been wet, molded and faded. Ink and sand-paper helped to accomplish that. Then I just stamped my new favorite quote on. And then hand-wrote in the authors name.

This journal is made from an old encyclopedia and I just gessoed the front and added my own wording.And speaking of my own text. I'll be teaching at class at Paper Cowgirl. Going through some old folders this morning, I re-located some favorite mag pages from the past. This is from Country Home Jan/Feb 2004. And too me, that year, CH was really doing some great stuff.

Back then Matthew Mead produced it, so there ya go. Great cuteness and I'm such a sucker for red. And toile. See why I kept these pages! :)

What kind of decor are you doing for Valentines? I've got my box of "goods" pulled out. I'm hoping to have the chance to create a little something.

Happy Belated New Year to ya! Hope you had a wonderful holiday time, as did we. Sweet Hub was lamenting that it just goes too fast. And it does. We had a blissful day Monday of just nesting, lounging in PJ's all day, watching old movies and I made a huge lunch. Truly it was heavenly. I would love to burrow down into the couch for about a week and just not move at all, but no such luck.

And speaking of luck, got to create a little. Kinda a fun card, "Lucky Number 8".

As I mentioned last week, I really did hit the mother of all Estate sales last week. With the result being, I can barely get into the Studio. So I need it to go out as fast as it came in. I'm offering low prices in my Etsy shop. And I do refund shipping if I overcharge.

Pinterest is Evil

I posted this on the other blog yesterday, but thought I would stick em here, really quick, for those that don't read the other blog. :)

Just showing off a few pages from a book that I recently completed for my young friend Avery. I wanted to do something really cool to document her first time to the Circus. Something she could be really interactive with.

I created lots of smaller flip pages, cards to journal on, doodles, and even silly things, like a clown mask (for journaling) and a pop corn box (for mementos). I wanted it to be as much fun as her day at the Circus was.

And I hope that she feels that way as well.

PS...why is Pinterest evil? Because I have 5 million things I NEED to be doing, and yet, I sit here, clapping in delight, squealing, "pretty pictures", like I don't have a care in the world. Good grief, menopause has eaten my mind. Along with Pinterest.

A single green bean!

Freezie, freezie! We had our first hard freeze this week. It was hard to see my wee little gardens frozen and dying. But, I've already gotten my first seed Catalog and I'm EAGERLY waiting for Spring!

Gardening made for an interesting summer, for sure. Because this summer, I took up gardening.

My first raised bed included Kale, Beets, Basil and Marigolds. This is before the freeze.

What you have to understand to get the big pic is this: 1. The ONLY way I have a green thumb, is if its covered in paint. 2. Sweet Hub often refers to me as, "the vampire". I don't even like to go outside to get the mail.

My second raised bed had squash, lettuce, parsley, thyme, green beans and cabbage.

So, for me to go outside, dig in the dirt AND face the bees, all without self combustion in the sunlight, a major feat indeed. I took a great class this summer, from the gals at Garden Inspirations. I am eagerly anticipating gardening catalogs and planning my artful garden journal. And hoping that I get at least one more wee green bean!

I learning that creativity comes in all shapes and sizes, even green. Even outdoors!

The Mother Loade of Estate Sales

Just when I depaired of never finding any cool vintage again, along comes the "mutha" load of all Estate Sales. Heaven, oh heaven. I picked for me, I picked for friends, I picked for me to sell on Etsy. Heavenly indeed. I don't think the lovely lady that had owned her sweet little 1900's cottage ever threw anything away. Bless her heart. And she crafted,painted, baked, drew and more. Yep, it was heavenly. Hope to get things on Etsy all this week. Keep your eyes on the shop, cause I'm passing the deals onto you! :)-Cindy

Last week passed in a whirl wind of uber creativity, lots of girl talk and laughter, shopping, creating, eating and all around fun. Between Paper Cowgirl classes and a quick decision to go to Canton, the past few days have felt like a week of "ooldes of goodness", to quote my sweet friend Lissa.

Even though I am the coordinator of Paper Cowgirl, rarely do I ever take classes. But when I do, I relish each moment. Such fun to be in the creative moment with other like minded gals. To see more of the what everyone else did, check out the Paper Cowgirl blog, http://papercowgirl.blogspot.com. Above is my collage BEFORE all the wicked cool modeling compound and wax has been applied. We began with paint, then collage elements were laid out in a pleasing design.

Melted beeswax is applied once all the elements are in place. This, to me, was loads of fun. I couldla just kept laying on that beeswax. So cool to see how it really made a visible difference. I also enjoyed going back and removing and scraping wax from certain areas. Bits of Lace, dots of white paint, buttons, all of the finishing touches come together in the end.

Great learning experience. I'm sure that I will be applying this technique to many more art projects to come.

Grumpy equals Creativity

Those dreaded words...root canal. Words that I had known that I never wanted to hear, were be spoken. ugh.

I found the procedure itself to not be as all the horror stories that I had heard. However, the recovery from, well, lets just say its been a long week. My usual antidote, to run to the Studio, was the answer for a wee bit of the time. Time that was not spent on the couch.

And while I did not get massive amounts done, I did manage to knock off a journal page(s) and a finish up a canvas collage piece that I had started last week. So, not too bad. For being grumpy! :)

Fall has finally arrived in Texas. Finally. Much needed rains yesterday morning brought a crispness and coolness that was sorely being missed.. Temps in the 70's today found us out and about at Calloway's (a garden/nursery), dreaming of what "could be" in our own backyard. Down the road abit, at Central Market (my fave, fab grocery store), we loaded the funky little green shopping basket full with several of the new apple varieties, Swee Tango and Zester and Little Sweetie, just to name a few. And apple ciders. Love apple ciders. Hello Fall. Its good to see you again my friend.

Creating. I love creating. Taking random bits and transforming them into something else.

Today I'm doing some creating for some pieces for Wicked Tea.And while I don't want to entirely let the "owl" of of the bag, I thought you might enjoy a sneakie peekie of what is happening in the Studio today. ADcame up with the wonderful color scheme of Silver, Black and lime green. Very pretty and elegant.You can't really see it, but I got the adorable owl image from Altered Artifacts! I love her shop. Check her out, she's got some great images for Halloween, as well as some steam punk stuff. OK...back to glittering!

Leaf it To Me!

This Summer has been one of the hottest and driest that I can remember. Evah! It's soooo hot...well, believe me it's just hot. And dry. And because of those two things and the fact that our tress are already so stressed, there most likely will NOT be any Fall color here. Not that there is much anyway...but for a few short weeks, we sometimes do get some pretty color.

That's the facts, jack. So what is a Fall loving gal to do. Make my own. So...I did. , Even if you do have pretty Fall colors in your neck of the woods, this is still a fun project to do.

Start with a leaf, a real leaf. Trace it onto light card stock like above. Sometimes I use an empty cereal box. Being green and all. Carefully cut it out, now you have a "master" leaf.

See? Just like above. Now pull several pages out of say, an old condensed Reader's Digest. You can generally pick them up at garage sales for under a buck. I also used an old encyclopedia too, but the thinner pages were more brittle, really easy to tear. So I think the Reader works better.Lay your master on top of 5 book pages. Trace around them. Carefully cut out all five pages at once. This is great to do in front of the TV.

Now, lay out your newly cut "leafs" and carefully dry brush them with Gesso. Let em dry. While they dry, I thought about roasting hot dogs and sitting around a campfire making smores...which I won't be able to do this year because of the drought. boo.

Once my Gesso'd leafs were dry, I piled em all in a big pile and jumped in...no. I piled em up and sprayed em with Maya Roads spray. I also sprayed them with some of my cousin Tim's (that's a joke!) alcohol ink mixed with some of his pearl dust, mixed in a Ranger mister.

Looks kinda like above. Now pull out one leaf and work quickly, dry brushing some Golden Fluid Acrylic paint here and there.

I love this paint. I would marry this paint, if only it would ask me. That's just how fab it is. You are laying down the paint, but also picking up the wet sprays, it makes a nice combo.

Your leaves are now beginning to look like this. Let's do em all!

I used green, red, and gold fluid acrylics. Seemed kinda fall to me and I thought those colors would mix in well with my little velvet pumpkins. I'm so happy Shells turned me onto these! I LOVE THESE SHELLY!

OK, now that we've gotten that out of our system, and all of our leaves painted, your leaf pile should begin to look like above.

Since I wanted mine a little more "grotty", my last step is to spray em lightly and randomly with a little Walnut Ink Stain. And stain it will, so be VERY careful where you spray. Most times I keep a spray bottle full of coffee, but the last batch got pretty moldy and I've not made any since, but that works well too!

There ya go! Now, let those pretty Fall leaves dry really really good and then you are ready to play. To make em look even more realistic, gently fold them in half. Then fold some of the leaf parts, corner to corner. Or roll an edge around a pencil. This just gives em a little more dimension.

Pile em up with pumpkins or just scatter em around. Make a pretty garland. Or write a name on one and use it as a place setting place card. Decorate a package with em. Just go crazy. And have fun! Thanks for peeping at my little project.

I should be thinking Fall. Leaves, darker colors and the such.

And yet, I seem to be stuck in Summer mode. The fact that it was 107 degrees here today is NOT helping.

Oh well. What's a gal to do? I stayed indoors and tried to catch up on imputing new goods to my Etsy.

Hard to believe that this month is really halfway over. As usual, its flown.

But the cooler mornings have been wonderful and here's hoping that this is the LAST extremely hot day that Texas will have to endure. Rain is supposedly on the horizon for Monday. I for one can't wait. -c

Who?

Me. Hello. My name is Cindy and I'm a Whovian. Yep. And I was in utter heaven weekend last as the BBC ran a marathon on the show, as well as, all sorts of specials. I love #11. His funny way of talking to himself and answering himself, his quick wit and he's just a cutie. But equal love for Rory, Amy and River as well. And River...how cool is she? Way diff from her character back on ER eons ago. She is a total bad azz and I love it.

I had actually watched the show years ago, with #9. And liked it, but just could not seem to remember to look for the BBC. Or more likely, we switched dish companies and the new one did not have. Can't remember, but for whatever reason, I did not follow it like I do now. Sweet Hub and I are huge fans of Brit comedy anyway, so it makes since that I would love this as well.

So, if you are looking for something a little different to watch, check out Dr. Who, on the BBC. Great fun and lots of funny lines. Here's the set up on one, Dr. Who is speaking to another character, going over the workings of the Tardis, and the other character says, "I'm confused". Dr. Who quickly responds, "Well, its a big club, we all should get tee shirts.". Something about it just cracked me up. I must have run it back several times, cracking up all over each time I watched. Sweet Hub finally walked into the room, glanced at the TV, looked at me, shook his head and walked off.

What can I say, a simple mind is easily amused. And apparently so is a Whovian.

OK. I promise this is the last journal page. But I did want you to see one totally complete with all of my thoughts filled in! :) This is why its so wonderful to have pages prepped and ready to go.

Which I copied the basics from a page that Shelly had in her book.

I modeled my page after one that Shelly had in her book. But as you can see from the first pic, well, my got a little out of hand. LOL. But again, so nice and handy to come in, grab a prepped page and journal all my thoughts and tid-bits from gardening class that morning. I added a few of the vintage people and loads and loads of more color. I wanted it to look like an Alice in Wonderland Fairy type garden.

Here's to me finding something new to work on tomorrow! :)

Hats! Here's to Juggling them!

Beautiful Velvet Pumpkins are the first thing you see when you walk in the door.

I'm willing to bet that like most of you, I juggle "hats" several times during any given week. One hat, the pretty pink one, is daughter, the fancy embellished one is my creative hat, and my sweetest red hat is wife. Add in my work hat, its a shabby turquoise bowler with a Doves Nest on it, my gardening hat, is of course, green (but probably more brown than green), and for good fun add my coaching hat (right now its black - LOL.) My Paper Cowgirl Hat, which is a Cowgirl hat of course, is probably glittered. Well, that's ALLOT of hats to keep in the air.

The "other" Cindy (the owner) did this gorgeous wagon full of pumpkins.

All of this is my yappy way of saying, "I've been merchandising most of the week". Yep, I've worn that Turquoise Bowler and kept the others in the air as best as possible. . And I thought you might like to see some of the cool things that the store has gotten in. I was hoping that thinking Fall, would make it feel like Fall, but no such luck. Its still HOT.

I love nests all year round, not just in Spring. And LOVED these new signs we got in.

What a difference a Class makes!

As you can see from the previous post, yep, what a difference a class makes!

Now, I'm not trying to make my blog, "all journal pages, all the time", but I just had to show you the tremendous difference a class really did make. Learning new tools, like Gesso and Golden paints, learning some basics on composition, balance, seeing what others in the class are doing, getting opinions, it all makes an amazing change in my artwork. And I could not be happier.

I was so honored to have Shelly Massey come literally, "right back to Texas", after just having taught here at Paper Cowgirl in June. This time we held an intense two day workshop on the basics of journaling from actually creating a book, to creating backgrounds, pages, lettering, comp, color and more. (Check out the PC Blog for more class info and pics).

Tickled, I'm positively tickled with the way my pages are now progressing. Just being able to immerse myself in the creativity of it all for two days was total bliss, as my friend Melissa kept saying. There is much to be said about hanging with like minded peeps. I know I will be on a creative high for the next several days. Yep, what a diff a day made!

Of all the movies I ever saw, funny how this ONE thing of Tom Hanks always stuck in my mind. LOL. Thought it was great for my page to jot down my favorite wine finds. :)

Journal pages are all that I want to work on lately. Funny how I go in spurts on that. LOADS of projects piling up and yet, all I want to do is journal. Silly. But keeps me in and outta the heat, as its way cool in the Studio...even the cats scream to go into that room, it really is the coolest place in the house! Hope you are staying cool...hopefully some rain will happen here on Friday.

Kitschy, Kitschy, Cute!

My Wreath

I was so happy with the way it turned out.

I'm so proud of my little kitschy Christmas Wreath that I made in Jenner's class on Saturday. Loads of fun to glitter and glue (I'm not really a big glitter girl) when I don't have to worry about the mess or cats walking through it all. This just reminded me of my childhood, it had that whole 60's kitsch feel to it.

Jennifer is one of my Paper Cowgirl teachers, and it was very amusing to be on the "other side" of the class room for a change. We were the boisterous table for sure, what with "Paula" and "Sister's fighting" going on. Great fun though. I always like being a part of the trouble making table. :)

And sitting next to Phyllis Ann, she always shares her supplies, she gave me the coolest flocked vintage bell. And then I had to copy her by glittering it. As I said, loads of fun.

I can hardly wait to decorate and mix my cute wreath in with all little houses and other kitschy Christmas. Just thinking of it makes me feel a little "frosty". Which is great for a 108 degree day. Hope you are staying cool.

Mini Home Tour

As you can see...I kinda like red. LOL. The living room is open to the dining room, so I felt like it made more sense to have everything flow with like colors. Red, gold, and black seem to be what I am continuously drawn too. Target, Estate Sales, Flea's and Hobby Lobby sales are all great places to get lots of bang for your bucks. With the occasionally splurge, such as the tea pot above. Great bday gift from the Sweet Hub.

Hoping to work on the bedroom in the Fall. New paint (which is one of the cheapest things you can do) is what I have in mind. Color choice is a tough one and that is where I'm at right now.

Workin on stuff

How is it that my house looks like this? (above)

And the things I like to create often look like this? This is a work in progress by the way, hoping it will turn out to be a really cool book cover.

I'm often frustrated by my "many selves". My decor taste (more on that tomorrow) leans towards Southern Living cute with some vintage thrown in. And most of the time my creating taste leans toward cute. But sometimes a little "funky" gets in there.

Which is always fun.

Poppin Fresh

Aging is a funny thing. Most of the time my brain is still popping full of ideas, thoughts and things. And sometimes I feel, well, not so popping fresh any more. Musically, I'm mired in the 80's and I think that is one of the signs of aging. Clothing wise, comfy wins every time. And I'm not so much into trends, I like what I like.

If I were young, that would be fresh. But being over 40, well, maybe it ages me. Aging, I am aging. And I am trying ever so much to do that very thing, "gracefully". And honestly, its hard.

When I'm with a group of people, I always find myself pulled into whatever the young ones are talking about. I'm not totally envious of the young. OK. A bit. I admire their ability to be new, everything is a possibility, young eyes and all that stuff. And I used to have that.

Now I have years, wisdom, been there done that. The big eye glasses everyone is wearing now (dear Lord, please don't make me wear those again!). Done it. Hello 80's.(Give me a cool pair of vintage, from the 40's thank you very much).

Feathers. Did. Try late 70's. Modern decorating, uhm, big wave from the 60's. And so it goes. They say everything old is new again. And that fashion repeats itself every twenty years. That there are no original ideas left. So what do I do?

I think Walt Disney said it best. He said, "Keep Moving Forward". So that is what I try and do. Learn, soak things up, talk to young people, look at blogs that are NOT in my comfort zone, keep it fresh. And along the way, add a little twist of what I already know. Maybe that's the way to keep poppin.

Busy as a Bee!

Trying to get inspiration. Need to make kits too!

Tried to get as much done as possible this week. But as usual, never enough. My brain wants to work...my body wants to lie in a hammock, read a great summer novel, sip lemonade and eventually, slip into a cool, clear swimming pool.

But since I can't find a novel I really want to read (for under $10.00), don't wanna fool with making lemonade, only have a sprinkler, don't own a hammock, well its pretty much a ucky summer for me. :) So work it us. Looking for inspiration to work on tags. Above I did while under the influence...of Shells. Funky huh?

Tags for Karla's swap...have not played a game in a while

Finally got tags done and out the door for Karla Whew. I wussed and made em all the same.

She came out a bit dark...but I like it. Tried to use all vintage.

Coffee stained tag and lace, vintage thread and images (thanks Beth!), inked and a wee bit of clear glitter (ugh!) rounded it off. A bit dark, but I like it.

So much stuff for Etsy. Trying to get it all in the shop.

*sigh* So much crap to put on my Etsy shop I'm overwhelmed. Cutting up vintage calendars for prints. I have some gorgeous ones.

This is just ONE of the many piles.

This is just one of many piles that needs to be tagged, photoed and added to the shop. LOVE that little cap. Is that not the cutest? I think I want to paint it on a canvas before I sell it. Would be sweet for a boys room.

I'm off to see if I can get anything accomplished.

I had wanted to play at Karen's Party but in typical ME fashion, I was too late. But I could not stand to waste the fact that I spent an entire day cleaning the Studio, so here are the pics anyway!

This is the new view from my desk. I decided it made more sense to have my Inspiration board where I could, well, actually see it.

And hopefully be "inspired".

One of my favorite things on the board is "baby". My friend "Sister" bought baby and we were actually supposed to share...but I could never quite let baby back out of my grasp. Isn't she sweet?

No matter how large the desk space, I always end up with only about two inches to work in. Happens every time.

This is one of my favorite things that I won from another blog.

Paper Bird garland. Needs help, they don't "fly right". :) But I like it anyway.

I'm a sucker for vintage bits of plastic fruit. And I do LOVE color, I'm not really a pink or neutral girl. Don't get me wrong, love to gaze fondly at those things, but for me, color always comes sneaking back in.

LOVE the Union Jack. A dear friend actually brought this one back from London for me.
